The Disciple’s Candle

Last year I wanted to create something visual for our family to mark the time between Jesus' death on Friday afternoon until his resurrection on Sunday morning. What I came up with is our disciple's candle. At the end of our devotion on Friday we dim the lights and then light a large pillar candle. This candle stays lit until Sunday morning. The candle helps us to remember two main things. One, the long wait the disciples had waiting to see if Jesus would indeed rise again and two, our own wait for Jesus' promised return. This year I wanted to have it be a bit more interactive for the girls. I fashioned a crown of thorns for them to place around the glass hurricane (which holds the candle) on Friday evening. On Sunday morning we will come down, blow out the candle and read our Easter morning devotion. Then the girls will get to decorate the crown of thorns with flowers and we will tie a purple ribbon around the hurricane. This will serve as our Easter dinner centerpiece. I hope it will allow us an opportunity to share the Easter story with our dinner guests.

Easter Snacks

Today was my daughter Emily's class Easter party. My friend Susan was in charge of snacks. She created these cute snacks that were a huge hit with the kids. I loved that they were special for the kids but were not pure sugar and food dye. These are the instructions from Susan.

  • Break a long pretzel stick in half. This makes the cross beam.

  • Dip the ends in chocolate (white or brown) of the broken shorter pretzel and a full pretzel.

  • Place the long pretzel on a cookie sheet or wax paper. Add a drop of chocolate 2/3 of the way up. Place the broken pretzel on the drop of chocolate.

  • Add more chocolate on top of the broken pretzel where the two pretzels meet.

  • If desired, add sprinkles while the chocolate is still warm.

Susan suggested using an extra pretzel to hold up the "cross beam" pretzel while the chocolate is still drying.

I was thinking it would be cute to make purple chocolate from white chocolate. You could make the center section looked draped in purple. That is probably more complicated than I personally could make - but I know some of you out there who could do that!

Enjoy!

Holy Week Devotions

Hi Everyone,
I posted daily devotions for all of holy week on my website. The link is on the right hand side of the blog. I thought that would be easier to print out than waiting for me to post them everyday. There was fresh snow on the ground here in Denver this morning, making it even harder to believe that Easter is this Sunday. I need to make a menu for Sunday night and get organized!
I hope that no matter if your week is snowy or hot, busy or slow, you are able to create the type of Holy Week that your heart desires for your family.
