There is a saying that ladies don't speak about politics or religion. Well I talk about the religion all the time, so I am going to throw caution to the wind talk about politics. I have really struggled with the idea of blogging about politics, primarily because I don't want to upset people. But the truth of the matter is that I am very passionate about politics. I grew up in a politically active home, where debate was expected not avoided, or shushed up. I have a minor in political science and if I didn't blog about over the next few months, this blog would no longer reflect who I am. So why do I think people will get upset if I talk about politics? Because I sit on what is considered the wrong side of the fence for an evangelical Christian. Yes, there it is, I'm a Democrat. (Oh, I feel so many of you cringing). For the past 8 years I have stayed mostly silent about my political views around my Christian friends. I bought into the marketing scheme that Republican's are God's party and Democrat are godless heathens. But now, facing a critical fork in our nation and world's road, I think it is vital to start talking about political choices. So I am going to be blogging about political topics on and off for the next few months. My goal is not upset you or even recruit you; it is to encourage you to have your own conversations with your friends, your bible study, your neighbors, your co-workers. Talk about those topics that can be uncomfortable, but are vital to our national consciousness; military action, social responsibility to the poor, our economic crisis, global warming, abortion rights, the list can go on and on. Let's start talking, and listening to one another, and come November we'll all be better informed to cast the correct vote for ourselves, our families and our nation.

Let’s just talk about things we shouldn’t…

Bring on the discussion Wendy. I appreciate your honesty and would expect nothing less.
Wow! I'm a moderate and a registered independent. I attend a very liberal college. I'm a poli sci major and love, love, love political discussions as well. I often feel ashamed being a Christian with some liberal viewpoints. I think there are more of us out there some are just not as willing to be honest about it!
good for you.
Well said, Wendy! It is hard to be a Democrat and a Christian, at least among the Christian community, as there are no shortage of people ready to make asinine comments about those hot-button issues like abortion rights and gay marriage. I usually avoid the political discussion because of my intense dislike for conflict, but something about the election this year is so exciting, it is impossible not to jump into it!
Coming from Scotland where Christians can be found on both sides of the political divide I found it puzzling to find here that if you are a Christian you must vote Republican rather than looking at individual candidates and take them on their merits on a range of topics. I will be following this year's Presidential race with great interest like the rest of the world.
You go girl. Thanks for speaking your mind and sharing your views! Like we talked about today, I have never understood why Christian = Republican when most Republicans support the war in Iraq (killing thousands of innocent americans and iraqi); support the death penalty (killing humans); do not support national healthcare (killing americans through neglect); do not support green energy (killing our planet and therefore humans). I could go on and on....
Aren't the foundations of Christianity and most spiritual practices to love and care for yourself and your neighbors? To help those less fortunate? Many christians do this in their community but not in the voting booth....why? Why does the party that often goes against all of these morals get the votes? I just don't get it....but hey, there is no doubt that I am democrat and proud of it.
Thank you, Wendy. This is an exciting time and I am proud of you for opening up this discussion and taking a stance that may not be the most comfortable one in your community!
