Our family loves picnics. In warm weather we eat lunch outside every chance we get. Our girls seem to eat anything if it is cloaked in the adventure of a picnic. The other day Sarah asked if we could go on a picnic. My gut reaction was "no, of course not, it's freezing outside!" But giving it some more thought, I thought, why not. On Friday, my friend Katie and I brought the kids on a polar bear picnic. We put blankets, sandwiches, a thermos of hot cocoa and cookies in a back pack and headed to the state park near us. I brought a set of binoculars and gave the kids the important job of being on the look out for polar bears. We walked for a while and then found a spot to have our cocoa and lunch. I brought polar bear shaped cookies and hid them for the kids to find. It was so nice to spend the afternoon outside in nature, letting the kids explore and just be wild frolicking kids. I will try to get some of Katie's pictures and put them up. ** Reminder – only 4 more days to leave a comment to be entered in this month's drawing for a Starbucks gift card. The winner will be announced Friday. Good luck.

good for you to be flexible and not just say no!
I wish I could be there to go on the polar bear picnic with all of you. I really enjoy reading about my cousins and what you all are doing. Wendy, you really are a inspiration to me as a woman and a mother.
is there a certain temperature it has to be to do these things?!?! i'm waiting for it to get at least above 20 degrees. i guess i'm not as fun as you wendy. gracie would just play in the snow until she was crying that her fingers hurt!
Great blog! Thanks for the insight.
Hi Wendy...
We love picnics too, but I've never been as brave as you to agree to have one in January! You're a fun mom!
See you Wednesday.
What great ideas and great family times!
xx
How fun is this?!
My girls would SO love this! You're brilliant! (now, if I could just get brave enough to try it)
Love your blog! (hopped over from Joanne's) So much great stuff! I'll be back!
That sounds like such a fun picnic.
You are a great mom!
I found you from Meredith's blog. She's an old friend that I have reconnected with on blog world.
She inspired me to start blogging.
Have a blessed day,
Julie
Wendy thanks so much for the wonderful idea. I decided to borrow it. We walked to pick my daughter up from school, I brought our pack animal (my lab with his hiking back pack on) and a scout (my pug), my son took his pirate spy scope and I brought my daughter binoculars. We have a large field behind my house on the way home so which stood in well for the "Artic". This tied in with the unit my son was doing in preschool on artic animals, so we not only spied polar bears, but also artic fox, artic bunnies, and Spiderman (he's everywhere). We too had polar bear cookies thanks to you, which I explained were fuel necessary for an artic expedition. This lead to fabulous talks with my kindergartener about artic exploration and how they had to pack all their supplies for an undertermined amount of time. She decided that she was just happy exploring our field. We have now been out in that field almost everyday exploring. Thanks for getting us outside! Great idea from a great lady.
You are one brave mama! I dread leaving the house if it's not at least 20 degrees and you're out there on these wonderful adventures. Maybe Kuwait will be a good post for us. At least we won't have to shovel for two years!
